Misconceptions about psychology

“Only weak people go to a psychologist.”

Psychological help is intended for healthy adults as well, who struggle with demanding life situations. These obstacles can be caused by previous damages coming from childhood or by difficult situations in the present such as a breakup, career change, conflict within the family or grief. Sometimes shorter 6-12 occasions can even help, but long-term collaboration can be justified as well.

“I have friends, I do not need a psychologist.”

“A psychologist will tell me what to do.”

Working together with a psychologist resembles much more to a partnership and not necessarily to a “doctor-patient” relationship. A psychologist can give you different perspectives, can ask targeted questions, can dissect possibilities but will not make decisions for you. He helps and supports you in making the best and most favourable decision and guides you along the path.

“I do not want to take medication.”

Psychologists cannot prescribe medicine, since they are no doctors. They can however suggest involving a psychiatrist in justified cases who can support the process with medications if needed.

“The psychologist only sits and listens.”

The psychologist is present with active attention and participation during the sessions. The meetings are filled with questions, feedback and common interpretation.

“The psychologist did not go through what I did. He will not understand my problem.”

Working together with a psychologist cannot only be successful, if the psychologist has the same experiences or traumas in their life. What can make a supportive and effective psychologist consists of empathy, openness, accepting and objective attitude.

“I have been to a psychologist already. It did not work for me.”

For every person choosing the “right” professional might mean something different. A psychologist works according to his personality, attitude and charisma. Common sympathy, tuning into each other and trust are as much the foundation of the common work with a psychologist as the knowledge and qualification of the professional. It is important, that the effectiveness can take several weeks, even months. We cannot talk about “going to the psychologist” after 1-3 sessions. With cases like that we do not expect outstanding results.
